when a senator loses control of his own town hall meeting. steve: kelly joins us from washington, d.c.. tempers are flaring last night. >> we have seen a lot of this going on. in the state of maryland, we're talking about senator cardin. outside, you are looking at the protesters shouting. these are the protesters for and against health care. those are hearing and shouting at each other. fortunately, no violence. on the inside is where the sparks were flying as well. the vigorous debate continued on the inside. it was pretty much the same thing on the outside. here is what center been carted -- senator cardin was facing. >> united states ranks 37th on health care results out heaof 191 countries. >> if you will just allow the senator a few more moments and we will get to the questions >> basically, you have people using their right of free speech and been very vigorous in their debate against health care. this has been going on across the country. the president of the united states said he welcomes vigorous debate, but in the long run, he would like to see more cooler haneads prevail.

going to be the interesting question. the longer this program goes on, the longer people get used to being subsidized for buying a car. steve: one of the arguments in the first place to get people onboard for cash for clunkers is they said this is really going to spur people buying american cars. not so fast. it turns out four of the five top cars we told you yesterday are made by foreign brands. now, yesterday, according to data we had, the ford focus was number one. but now look at this. toyota corolla number one. ford focus number two. honda civic number three. toyota prius number four. and toyota camry number five. so essentially cash for clunkers has turned into a huge bailout for toyota. peter: and the transportation secretary yesterday in the interview gretchen conducted made it clear in response to our question. well, yeah, this is an american program. this was done to benefit american cars. gretchen: but under the auspice of the fact that a lot of those toyotas artoyotas are manufactun the u.s. but the p.r. message is not a good one. a very interesting point that i would lik

thing. if you see something fishy, e-mail it to us at flag at white house.com. yesterday somebody said this is really a bad idea. there's been a firestorm now. we were just talking about the firestorm on the left. now on the right. a letter was sent to the white house saying, hey, what exactly are you going to do to ensure that all of those e-mail address that were sent to you, you're not going to use them for retribution or anything? he said as the light suddenly came on -- gretchen: the second coming. coming down from heaven. brian: go ahead, steve. steve: so they want to know why and how the e-mails were sent to the white house from people who didn't request them as well. so in addition to the fishy e-mail, he wants to know how did all of those people who didn't ask for white house correspondence wind up with that memo from david axlerod? gretchen: this is a huge story to me. this is huge that the white house is now saying that they no longer have this e-mail box. steve: they shut it down. gretchen: they shut it down. this is big news. the big question today will be whether or

, anyway. used to be at 70%. for a while it was 60%. right now if you go on the weekly ratings, the weekly poll with galup -- and they've been doing this for a while, the galup family. his approval rating is 52%. that's a significant drop considering where it was. last month it was at 59%. it was really before, eric, this whole health care debate began. eric: o'reilly put this out last night. he was 40% of the people polled in rasmussen strongly disapproved. i mean strongly, not just disapproved. only 28% strong lay proved. -- strong lay proved. there's a real movement with people getting more and more upset with how he's handling the health care debate. gretchen: there's been little flip in people who describe themselves as liberals. as you might expect. the same would have been true for the most part for george bush, that the ardent supporters probably aren't going to change their mind. however, the two key groups, the independents -- remember, this is how barack obama got elected, because so much of the country sees itself in the middle. some conservatives some liberal on points
